General Questions Flashcards
What are the three parts that make up nucleotide
Nitrogenous base, 5 carbon sugar, and phosphate group
What is meant by base pairing when referring to a dna double helix
Adenine bonds with thymine
Cytosine bonds with guanine
Differentiate between somatic cells and sex cells
Somatic cells- diploid cells (2n), growth and repair, go through mitosis
Sex cells- haploid cells (n), reproduction, goes through meiosis
Four main types of lathe scale mutations in chromosomes.
Translocation- fragment of one chromosome. Attached to a non homologous chromosome
Deletion- occurs when a fragment of dna is lost
Duplication- occurs when part of the chromosome is repeated
Inversion- reverses a fragment of the original chromosome
Why more males are impacted by hemophilia
Hemophilia is an x linked recessive disorder. Males only have one copy of X chromosomes. Meaning they will have to inherit one recessive alleles and females would need two.
