Makes the relationships between various features, systems, dominant patterns, and constraints understandable
The Inventory and Analysis Process
The study of statistics such as births, deaths, income, or the incidence of disease, which illustrate the changing structure of human populations.
Allows the LA to analyze neighborhood characteristics, compare neighborhoods, determine median income, and determine data projections of housing needs.
Demography
A field of theory in which the design of the landscape, not buildings, is used to guide development.

Data gathering aimed at determining a site’s physical, biological, and cultural attributes. Extends beyond the site to include surrounding context. Serves as the basis for site analysis and ultimately site programming and design
Site Inventory
The process of determining the fitness of a given parcel of land for a specific use.

Suitability Analysis
LaGro’s (3) steps of suitability analysis
- Identify suitability criteria for each anticipated land use
- Collect and map the relevant site attribute data
- Identify the site locations with attribute values that meet the suitability criteria for the programmed land uses.
Program developed by USDA used by state and local government to protect prime, unique, or locally important farmland from development
Land Evaluation and Site Assessment System (LESA)
Planning tool whose purpose is to provide a means to analyze the potential visual impact of proposed projects and activities on the environment and for identifying measures to mitigate these impacts
Visual Resource Analysis
Involves a number of actions on the part of the planner / designer with the objectives of comparing the desired program elements and activities with existing physical resources to determine a feasible design
May take into account operation and maintenance requirements / other client capabilities to assess the ‘fitness’ of the program

A planning and assessment tool used to characterize or map trends of urban character based on land use or visual qualities.
Urban Landscape Analysis
A planning and development approach based on the principles of how cities and towns had been built for the last several centuries: walkable blocks and streets, housing and shopping in close proximity, and accessible public spaces.
In other words an approach that focuses on human-scaled urban design.
New Urbanism
