General anesthesia: definition
reversible state of cns depression with -unconsciousness -loss of pain sensation -memory loss -inhibition of autonomous reflexs and skeletal muscle relaxation.
General anesthesia: use
for surgical procedure to render the patient unaware / unresponsive to the painful stimuli.
Stages of anesthesia:
Stage I : Analgesia Stage II : Excitement, combative behavior – dangerous state
Stage III : Surgical anesthesia
Stage IV : Awakening Medullary paralysis – respiratory and vasomotor control ceases.
Preanesthetic medication:
To relieve anxiety – benzodiazepines ( diazepam and midazolam)
To prevent allergic reactions – antihistaminics. To prevent nausea and vomiting – scopolamine, metclopramide)
To provide analgesia – opioids.
To prevent bradycardia and secretion – atropine.
