Gene expression Flashcards
What is gene expression?
Process of how specific genes are activated to produce required proteins
What does gene expression involve?
Transcription and Translation of DNA sequences
Genes are expressed to produce?
Proteins
What do Transcription and Translation both include?
Three types of RNA (mRNA, tRNA, rRNA)
What makes up a RNA molecule?
Single stranded molecule and is composed of nucleotides containing ribose sugar, phosphate and one of the four bases
What does messenger mRNA do?
mRNA carries a copy of the DNA code to the ribosome
What happens to mRNA?
mRNA is transcribed in the nucleus and translated into proteins in the cytoplasm by ribosome
What is the triplet of mRNA bases called?
A codon which codes for a specific amino acid
What does tRNA do?
tRNA (transport RNA) molecules carry their specific amino acid to the ribosome
