GASTROINTESTINAL PHYSIOLOGY Flashcards
Four functions of GIT
Motility
Secretion
Digestion
Absorption
Motility
Muscular contractions that mix and move forward content of the GIT.
Two types of digestive motility
Propulsive movements
Mixing movements
Propulsive movements
Push forward the content of the GIT
Mixing movements
Mixing food with digestive juices to promote digestion.
Facilitates absorption by exposing all parts of the GIT content to absorption surfaces of the GIT
Secretion
Secretion of enzymes, electrolytes, bile and mucous into the digestive tract lumen
What happens to the secretions after digestion has taken place?
They are re absorbed into the blood.
Digestion
Biochemical breakdown of food into smaller units
Absorption
small units resulting from digestions, along with water, vitamins and electrolyte transferred from digestive tract lumen to blood or lymph
Where does most absorption take place?
Small intestine
