Q

Who is credited for modernizing and cleaning up Friulian winemaking?

A

Mario Schiopetto
- The introduction of controlled cold fermentations in stainless steel, coupled with the region’s moderate temperatures, led to the Friulian style: crisp, aromatic, fruit-driven varietal white wines designed for quick consumption

Describe this wine

A

8.9.10: The third rarity in this round of new releases, Gravner’s mind-bending “8.9.10” is the scarcest of them all. In the vintages 2008, 2009, and 2010, Josko painstakingly selected individual bunches of Ribolla based on their perfection of botrytis and allowed them to hang until well into November, picking them at towering sugar levels and meager levels of juice. This wine, aged in small used barrels and bottled in 2015, combines the juice from all three of those vintages into an elixir both massively sweet and shockingly complex

- Friuli Colli Orientali
- Legend has it that in the year 800 the hermit Alemanno settled on the Rosazzo hill for a spiritual retreat. About two hundred years later, in the same place, the Augustinians taught the local populations to cultivate the land and, still in the same place, the first traces of the Pignolo vine were found, dating back to the late 18th century. Known as Pignul in Friulian dialect, fragile with low productivity, it was on the verge of extinction in the late 19th century, but was later rediscovered and recovered – once again, at Rosazzo. The confident, soulful grapes of Eremita are wild at heart, with a historical value branded on the memory of our area.

Q

“After the fall of fascism and World War II, it took nearly a decade to decide on the border between Italy and Yugoslavia—a border so arbitrary that it reportedly split some farms and vineyards in half, with one side Italian and the other side Yugoslav. Today, many producers have vineyards on both the Italian side and the Slovenian side. The regions often have parallel names on the two sides of the border: Collio Goriziano becomes (blank), and Carso becomes (blank).”

“In the 1960s, winemaker (blank) traveled throughout Europe and brought German innovations in vinification and viticulture back to Friuli. He was at the forefront of Friuli’s modern white wine revolution, employing techniques such as cold fermentation, selected yeasts, stainless-steel tanks, and a focus on cellar hygiene for a style of clean and fruity wines.”
