Friction Flashcards
What Is friction?
A Force that opposes motion between two surfaces that are in contact
Why is it easy to slip when there is water on the floor
The water is a lubricant and reduces friction between your feet and the floor.
Why does friction occur?
The rough surfaces (Hills and vallys) rub against eachother and produce thermal energy
How does the roughness affect the friction
The rougher the surface, the more friction
How does force affect friction?
The moe force, the more friction
How do you increase friction?
Increase roughness? force.
What is kinetic friction?
The friction between moving surfaces.
What is Static friction?
When force is applied to an object but does not cause it to move.
Name some examples of harmful friction
Holes in socks, Worn down tires
Name some examples of helpful friction.
Brakes on car, pencil on paper.
When can static friction be helpful?
leaning against a wall
When can kinetic friction be helpful?
Erasing something on a paper.
