Episodical event / activity mediated by language
What are Scripts?
An action seq/protocol mediated by language & performed within frame
Where are Scripts acquired from?
Daily interaction with people
What is the Social Script Theory?
The human mind is like a computer using scrips to perform actions in specific frames
What is a Metaphor?
Something (source domain) in terms of another (target domain)
What is a Verbal Irony?
Use of Surface Meaning to convey a different Underlying meaning
What is Grice’s Co-operative Principle?
Make your conversational contribution such as is required at the stage at which it occurs b the accepted purpose/direction of the talk exchange in which you are engaged
What are the 4 conversational maxims?
1) Quality (don’t lie or say what you have no basis for): right INFO
2) Quantity (don’t give too much or too little info): right AMOUNT of info
3) Relation (don’t give irrelevant info): right PURPOSE / KIND of info
4) Manner (say things briefly, unambiguously, clearly): right STYLE
Why do people flout these maxims?
1) Impolite to tell truth straight
2) Reveals speaker’s inventiveness & sense of humour
3) Strengthen r/s with banter
What do these maxims depend on?
1) Mode of Communication
2) Tenor of r/s between interlocutors
3) Field/subject matter
