What was Aristotle’s criteria for a tragedy?

A

It should focus on a noble character who makes a mistake. This leads to their. downfall and the hero is punished severely. in the end, the noble hero gains some self-knowledge and, partially at least, redeems their reputation.

What is the significance of the political backdrop in theses of tragedy?

A

the play opens as though it will be a political tragedy, as the Turks are set to invade Cyprus and its Othello’s role to hold backache invasion. However, the political situation becomes just a backdrop to the personal tragedy that unfolds.

What is the significance of Venice?

A

It was seen as a civilised, lawful place, associated with power, commerce and wealth. Venetian society had a liberal attitude towards sex - Venetian women were thought to be promiscuous.

A

It is isolated. The island has associations with hostility and conflict - Cassio calls Cyprus “this warlike isle”. Even after the Turkish Fleet are defeated, there are lots of domestic conflicts on the island.

A

A

The destructive passions that will cause problems on the island. With the external threat of war removed, the setting in Cyprus becomes claustrophobic as the focus increasingly closes in on just one couple - Othello and Desdemona.
