Q

what does the first person narrative of Jane Eyre suggest

A

First person narrative

establishes her character which is introduced to us through themes and it guides our response to Jane as a character and certain situations.
Sometimes we see an older Jane intrude:
“Yes, Mrs Reed, to you I owe some fearful pangs of mental suffering, but I ought to forgive you”

The word ought implies that she is still unable to forgive her aunt after forgiving Mrs Reed in her death bed. Perhaps it is more a duty rather than a sincere gesture. It allows the reader to appreciate the magnitude of the trauma Jane experienced whilst she was in the red room

“No severe or prolonged bodily illness followed this incident of the red-room, it only gave my nerves a shock of which I feel the reverberation to this day”

the fist person injection form older Jane allows the reader to appreciate the long-term phycological impact of being locked in the red room

Q

what does the direct address in Jane Eyre suggest

A

Direct Address

“Reader, though I look comfortably accommodated I am not very tranquil in my mind”

signifies the change of mood. Shifting form the external world to Jane’s feelings makes the reader aware that outside appearances may be deceptive, a theme that is apparent throughout the novel. The use of direct address and present tense together creates tension and allows the reader to feel Jane’s doubts and fears

Q

what does withholding information in Jane Eyre creates

A

We know that the story is written by an older Jane who sometimes intrudes herself into the story. We know as readers that Jane could reveal that Jane could have revealed that Mr R had a wife. She withdraws this info to add tension and capture the readers imagination. It also allows the reader to sympathise with how Jane is feeling
