forces Flashcards
what is a vector quantity?
vector quantity is a quantity that has both magnitude and direction
what’s the formula for acceleration?
change in velocity/time
what is inertia?
inertia is how difficult is is to change an object’s motion
what is the equation for weight?
w=mg (weight= mass x gravity)
what is resultant force?
resultant force is the sum of all the forces acting on an object
what is force?
a force is a push or pull that acts on an object due to the interaction
with another object
what are the 2 types of forces that act between objects?
contact forces & non-contact forces
what is a contact force? (give 2 examples)
contact force is where the objects are physically touching.
examples:
friction, air resistance, tension and normal contact force
what is a non-contact force? (give 2 examples)
non-contact force is where the objects are physically separated
examples:
gravitational force, electrostatic
force and magnetic force.
what type of quantity is force?
vector quantity
what is a scalar quantity?
has magnitude but no direction.
what is it called when the weight of an object acts at a single point of an object?
center of mass
what is weight measured with?
weight is measure using a calibrated spring-balance (newton meter)
what are the two formula’s for resultant force?
resultant force =
mass x acceleration
F=ma
forces acting in one direction - force acting in the opposite direction
what happens to resultant force when an object is moving?
there is no resultant force
