Fluid and Electrolytes Flashcards
What are the four ECF compartments?
Intravascular, interstitial, lymph, transcellular
What is an electrolyte?
Substance whose molecules dissociate or split into ions when placed in water
What is filtration pressure made of?
Hydrostatic pressure, oncotic pressure
What is hydrostatic pressure?
Pressure exerted by fluid within a closed system - “push”
What is oncotic pressure?
By proteins - “pull”
What it the level of NaCl in the blood at normal levels?
0.9%
Levels of sodium
135-145mEq/L
Functions of sodium?
Water balance, major ECF cation, nerve impulses
Potassium levels
3.5-5.0mEq/L
Function of Potassium
Major ICF cation, cardiac conduction, metabolism
Calcium levels
8.5-10.5 mg/dl
Calcium function, what does it need to be absorbed?
Muscle contraction, blood clotting. Needs vit. D to be absorbed
Phosphate levels (weird)
1.6-2.9mEq/L
Phosphate functions
Forms bones and teeth, metabolism, regulates Ca levels, basically everything
Magnesium levels
1.5-2.5mEq/L
