Flammable Gas Flashcards
What are the two most common chemicals that can be considered flammable gases?
Propane and methane aka natural gas
This gas is odorless, colorless, and lighter than air. When it is released it will tend to rise and dissipate.
Natural gas (methane)
This gas is odorless, tasteless, and heavier than air. When released it will tend to move to low lying places.
Propane
Both methane and propane have what added to them to warn of their presence?
Odorant
What is the required PPE for all flammable gas calls?
Full turnouts with SCBA.
What is the IDLH for flammable gases?
10% of the lower flammable limit.
In flammable gas calls, when do you consider a Level 2 Hazmat?
When air monitoring capability is needed.
Most outdoor gas leaks do not require offensive action by fire personnel. So what do you do?
Isolate the hazard and wait for the utility company to secure the leak.
If you have a flammable gas leak outside what 3 things do you do?
Isolate a min of 100ft
Control ignition sources
Put a 1 3/4 hose line down to protect property
What things do you do if there is a gas leak inside the structure?
Shut off gas to structure
Monitor air
Vent if LEL is over 10%
Evacuate adjacent structures
Do fire personnel ever restore gas services to a structure after they have been shut off?
NO!
Are flammable gas leaks with fire an offensive or defensive operation?
Defensive
We DO NOT extinguish pressure fed flammable gas fires until what?
Not until the fuel supply can be controlled
Who do you work with to stop the flow of gas to a pressure fed fire?
The utility company
Aside controlling the pressure fed fires gas supply and then putting it out, what is another huge consideration when establishing your tactical priorities?
Protecting exposures
