Fish Feeding Habits Flashcards
Fish feeding habits are opportunistic. What does this mean?
- depends on opportunity for food
Define herbivore
- eat plant material
What is the disadvantage of eating plants?
- less energy/nutrient dense = need to eat more
Are any cartilaginous fish herbivores?
no
What percent of bony fish are herbivores?
<5%
What feeding habits do browsers have?
- selective, eat only plant
What feeding habits do grazers have?
- less selective, plants and sediments (bulk feeders)
Define detritivore
- organic plant material (decomposing)
What percent of fish species are detritivores?
5-10%
Define omnivores
- feed on animal or plant matter
What does it mean that omnivores have a prevalence for carnivory?
- given the chance; animal > plant (gets all nutrients it needs)
Define carnivores
- eat other animals
**ALL LARVAL FISH ARE CARNIVORES (feed on zooplankton)
What are the feeding habits of suspension feeders (2)
- suction
- ram
What are the feeding habits of benthic invertebrate feeders (4)
- graspers
- pickers
- sorters
- crushers
How do sorters eat?
- spit things out they don’t want to swallow
How do crushers feed?
- break shells of shellfish
What are the feeding habits of piscivores? (4)
- fish as prey
- active pursuit
- stalking
- ambush
What are the feeding habits of scavangers?
- find dead animals
