Final Syncope Flashcards
Syncope is the episodic loss of consciousness associated w/loss of what?
POSTURAL tone d/t hypo perfusion of brain.
ex:vasovagal response, buckle knees
What is the aka for vasovagal syncope?
simple faints
What are the precipitating factors aka Sympathetic response of vasovagal syncope?
emotions pain sight of blood fatigue prolonged motionless standing
What pathophysiology of simple faints vasovagal syncope?
vagal mediated decrease in Arterial BP and HR; these combo to make CNS hypoperfusion resulting in syncope
What is the order of events of syncope?
standing/sitting prodromal symptoms 10s-few min pt falls unconsciousness recovery postnatal phase
What are the prodromal symptoms of vasovagal syncope?
weariness nausea diaphoresis light headiness pallor tachycardia
What happens when pt falls in an vasovagal event?
becomes pale, diaphoretic w/dilated pupils
Loss of consciousness in vasovagal syncope is d/t
bradycardia replaces tachycardia
NOTE: pt has rapid recovery
In the postictal phase of fainting pt can experience
HA, dizzy, nausea, w/or w/out short confusion
What is the pathophysiology of cardiovascular syncope?
abrupt decrease in cardiac output = cerebral hypo perfusion
What are the causes of cardiovascular syncope?
cardiac arrest rhythm disturbances cardiac inflow/outflow obstruction leak/dissect aortic aneurysm acute pulmonary embolus
What are indicates cardiovascular syncope
recumbent position
known hx of heart dz
during/after physical exertion
Orthostatic hypotension aka postural hypotension is a form of
hypotension, pt BP falls suddenly laying down to sitting, sitting to standing, standing to stretching
In medical terms what is hypotension d/t BP falls suddenly standing/stretching?
systolic BP falls at least 20 mm Hg or diastolic BP at least 10 mm Hg in standing position
Symptoms caused by blood pooling in lower extremities d/t body position is associated w/what condition?
orthostatic hypotension
