FINAL Flashcards
normal flora
-natural bacteria living in and on normal human
-increase host fitness by increasing immune system, out competing other pathogens
-
Gnotobiotes
Expiremental animals with no flora, show decreased fitness
Pathogens (4 kinds)
True/frank/primary - cause disease in healthy host
- opportunistic - cause disease in immunocomprimised humans
- Endogenous - part of the normal flora that infects a compromised system
- exogenous - pathogen from external source
Localized Infection
Contained in a specific area
Systemic Infection
Throughout entire body
septic Infection
BACTERIAL infection of the blood
mixed Infection
multiple different organisms in single infection
primary Infection
initial infection, generally by true pathogen
secondary Infection
generally an opportunistic pathogen that piggy backs on a primary
Acute Infection
Infection is RAPID, usually short and self limiting
Chronic Infection
Progresses slowly, persist for long period of time
Stages of Infection
Incubation Period
Period of Invasion
Convalescent Period
Symptoms
How the patient FEELS
Signs
Signs that a clinician can physically see and measure
- swelling
- edema
- redness
Signs of blood infection
-Change in WBC counts
Leukocytosis - increase in WBCs
Leukopenia - decrease in WBCs
