File Types Flashcards
JPG - Image
A lossy image file type that uses an algorithm for compression to retain the image whilst saving as much file space as possible - used for printing.
PNG - Image
Similar to JPG, PNG is a lossy file type however it is slightly better as it can support transparency ( no pixels being in part of the image ) - used for printing.
TIFF - Image
This is a lossless file type and takes up a lot of storage because it retains all of the detail pixel for pixel - this is good for print usage not web usage.
GIF - Image
A lossless file type that uses very small file sizes and can be easily compressed can also be animated and this is mostly used on the internet.
PSD - Image
A photoshop file that saves all image data including layers history and adjustment it is fully editable and lossless
MP3 - Audio
This is a lossy sound file that you can choose how much you compress the audio by.
WAV - Audio
This is a music sound file type that is lossless, this file type is only supported by windows services
FLAC - Audio
This is a music sound file type that is lossless
AIFF - Audio
This is a music sound type that is lossless and created by Apple and retains the whole audio meaning it has a high file size. (Apple’s version of a WAV)
AAC - Audio
Standard lossy format used with MPEG4 video, this has no licensing issues unlike the MP3 file type.
MP4 - Video
Similar to MP3 but in video MP4 is a lossy video format that retains most of the frames and pixels but using an algorithm it saves file storage.
AVI - Video
Very versatile and widely used file type.
FLV - Video
These are adobe flash videos they remain high quality and are compatible with all browsers.
MOV - Video
Developed by apple but can be played using quick time.
WMV - Video
Developed by microsoft, these files can be compressed really small - good for web uses.
