Simile
-Two different things are compared using “like” or “as”.
-Example
The cupcake is as light as a feather.
Symbol
-The use of an object or picture to express a quality or meaning for something else
-the quality or meaning is usually very deep.
-Examples
Dove is a symbol of peace. Red rose is a symbol romance. Black is a symbol of death or evil.
Onomatopoeia
- A word that imitates the sound it describes
- Examples Pow! Vroooom!
Personification
-Giving human qualities to something that is not human
Metaphor
-Comparison between two unlike objects
Idiom
-A phrase that means something different than the actual words
Hyperbole
-An extreme exaggeration to make a point
Alliteration
-Repetition of the same sound at the beginning of word is a series of words
Example Peter piper picked a peck of pickled peppers.
Imagery
-Pictures created in the mind through the use of figurative language
