Fibres And Fabrics Flashcards
What type of fibre is cotton? What is its appearance?
Cotton is made from natural fibres. It’s appearance is smooth.
What are the good properties of cotton?
Strong (even when wet), comfortable, cool in hot weather, absorbent (easy to wash and add dye to), fairly cheap, non-static, doesn’t cause allergies
What type of fibre is wool made from? What appearance can it have?
Wool is made from natural fibres. It’s appearance can be soft or coarse.
What are the good properties of wool?
Wool is warm, absorbent, crease resistant, has low flammability and good elasticity.
What are the bad properties of cotton?
Cotton creases easily, dries slowly, can shrink when washed, has poor elasticity and high flammability.
What are the bad properties of wool?
Wool can feel itchy, can shrink when washed, dried slowly and is fairly expensive.
What type of fibre is viscose made from? What appearance does it have?
Viscose is made from regenerated fibres. It looks smooth, light and glossy.
What are the good properties of viscose?
Viscose is absorbent, soft, comfortable to wear, has a good drape, is easily washable and fairly cheap.
What are the bad properties of viscose?
It is not very hard wearing, has high flammability, and poor elasticity.
What type of fibre is acetate made from? What is its appearance?
Acetate is made from regenerated fibres. It’s appearance is smooth and glossy.
What are the good properties of acetate?
It is soft, comfortable to wear, has a good drape, is easily washable, fairly cheap and resists biological/sun damage.
What are the bad properties of acetate?
It is highly flammable, not very hard-wearing, not very absorbent and has poor elasticity.
What type of fibre is polyester made from? What is its appearance?
Polyester is made from synthetic fibres. It’s appearance is smooth, but it can have lots of different finishes.
What are the good properties of polyester?
It is strong, resists creasing, has good elasticity, low flammability, hard wearing, cheap, dries quickly and resists biological weathering.
What are the bad properties of polyester?
Not absorbent, not biodegradable, damaged by strong acids, melts as it burns.
