Fibres Flashcards
Describe microfibres
60-100 times thinner than a human hair Narmally mixed with nautral fibres Synthetic or regenerated Expensive so it blended with cotton Thermoplastic polyester is heatedget coils, loops crimps to get texture and stretchy Outdoor wear
What are biofibres?
Renewable fibres that dont pollute the environment
What are filament yarns?
continuous lengths of yarns
What are staple yarns?
Short fibres
What are the two twists and why are they use?
Z&S twist to make them stronger for their end use
What is microencapsulation?
Microcapsules are coated in a shell and are embedded in microfibres
Antibacterial socks
Why are fibres blended?
To combine properties
reduct fibre cost
Improved wear and care properties
What are ply yarns?
2 yarns twisted together
What are core spun yarns?
Multi component yarns - core stays central
What is lamination?
Two or more layers added to delicate fabrics to add strength
What does Goretex do and how is it made?
It has tiny pores to allow water vapour out but rain drops are prevented from getting in. Laminate a gortex membrane between 2 layers; an outer layer (nylon or polyester) and an inner layer (PU) making it sturdier.
How are fabrics made from fibres?
Spun into yarns
Woven or knitted
Finished
Made into products
Why is silk not a staple fibre?
continuous filaments up to 1km long
