Fetal Circulation Flashcards
umbilical vein
oxygen and nurtient rich blood provided to the fetus
umbilical artery
oxygen and nutrient depleted blood returned to placenta
Number of Aortic Arches
6
Which atrium is the remnant of the valve of the foramen ovale (aka septal scar)?
left
Which atrium contains the fossa ovalis?
right
Ductus venosus
vein that bypasses the blood from the liver directly into the caudal vena cava
Ductus arteriosus
redirects blood to the descending aorta to avoid the high resistance to flow in the lungs
What does the ductus arteriosus become in the adult? What triggers it?
Ligamentum arteriosum
increased oxygen tension
What triggers the conversion in adult circulation?
various release of prostaglandins
What do the umbilical arteries become in adult circulation?
round ligaments of the bladder
What does the umbilical vein become in adult circulation?
round ligament of the liver
What happens to ductus venosus in adult circulation?
Closes –> portal vein now responsible for perfusing liver
Persistent aortic arch
5th aortic arch doesn’t regress and entraps the esophagus and trachea, which is kind of a problem
Tetralogy of Fallot
- Pulmonic stenosis
- Displacement of aorta
- Right ventricular hypertrophy
- Ventricular septal defect
leads to cyanosis
