Femur, Hip & Pelvis Flashcards
The pelvis consist of what 4 bones?
right & left hip bones
scrum
coccyx
The pelvic girdle consist of what 2 bones?
right and left hip bones
What are the 3 parts of each hip bone?
ilium
ishium
pubis
The 3 parts of the hip bone come together to form what?
acetabulum
What are the 4 prominent processes of the ilium?
anterior superior iliac spine
anterior inferior iliac spine
posterior superior iliac spine
posterior inferior iliac spine
Sacroiliac (SI) joints are what type of joints?
gliding
What type of joints are the hips?
ball & socket
What is the cartilaginous, slightly moveable joint of the pelvis?
pubic symphysis
What IR size is used for a femur or pelvis?
14x17
What IR size is used for a hip?
10x12
What is the position of the femur for an AP projection to include the knee?
- leg extended and centered to the IR
- bottom of IR extends 2 in. below knee
What is the position of the femur for an AP projection to include the hip?
- leg extended and centered to the IR
- top of IR at ASIS
CR for all femur projections?
perp. to center of IR
What size should the patient turn to for a lateral projection of the femur?
to the affected side
What is the position of part for a lateral femur (to include the knee)?
- pelvis in true lateral
- flex knee about 45 degrees
- place epicondyles perp. to tabletop
What is the position of part for a lateral femur (to include the hip)?
- place IR at level of ASIS
- place pelvis in a position 10-15 degrees from true lateral
What is the part position for an AP pelvis?
- MSP of body centered to midline
- medially rotate feet and lower limbs 15-20 degrees
- upper border of IR 1in to 1 1/2 in above crest
CR for AP pelvis
2 in superior to pubic symphysis
What is the part position for an AP hip?
- no rotation of pelvis
- medially rotate lower limb and foot 15-20 degrees
CR for AP hip
perp. to femoral neck
What is the part position for a lateral hip (both methods)?
- flex affected knee and draw thigh to almost right angle to hip
- body of femur parallel to table
CR for lateral hip (Lauenstein)
- perp. through hip
- enters midway between ASIS and pubic symphysis
CR for lateral hip (Hickey)
angled 20 degrees cephalic
What is the hip projection that is done is there is trauma to the hip?
Axiolateral hip
What is the part position for an axiolateral hip?
- flex knee and hip of unaffected limb to place thigh vertical
- rotate affected limb 15-20 degrees medially (if possible)
CR for axiolateral hip
- horizontal
- perp. to long axis of femoral neck
