Feminism as a movement has largely experienced 3 waves.
When did the first-wave of feminism begin?
Early 1900’s
What was the focus of first-wave feminists?
- Started in the early 1900’s
- Largely concerned with gaining the right to vote + the ability for women to own / inherit property.
When did the second-wave of feminism occur?
1960’s-1980’s
What was the focus of second-wave feminists?
- Occurred during the 1960’s until around the 1980’s
- Focused on sources of inequality + discrimination
- For example: unequal pay, sexist power structures & exploitation of women.
When did the third-wave of feminism begin?
It started in the early 1990’s and is still about today
What is the focus of third wave feminism?
- Started in the early 1990’s and is still felt today
- It concerns itself with less tangible goals like voting, credit cards and equal pay (which are now largely established) and moves towards women’s experiences informing daily life.
What does modern feminism focus on?
Moved away from biological essentialism and attempts to examine how the experience of womanhood is different across races, religions and classes.
