What made it a disaster?

A

Impacted the soil of the surrounding area which affected livestock.
Ash cloud which affected flights in Europe - over 95,000 flights were affected. But there were no deaths or human fatalities. There were only economic losses associated with flight cancellations - airports lost around 80m
