What does the integumentary system do
waterproofs, cushions, protects
How does the integumentary system protect us
- serving as a barrier against infection and injury
- helping to regulate body temperature
- removing waste products from the body
- providing protection against UV rays
What are some common conditions or the integumentary system
- Viral (chicken pox)
- fungal (athletes foot)
- bacterial (injury, skin ulcers, acne)
- Yeast
- Parasites
- inflammation/ irritation
what is psoriasis
- production of new skin cells increases while shedding of old skin cells remains the same
- patches of inflamed, thickened skin- scales or plaque
What are some treatment for psoriasis
- corticosteroids
- anti- puritics
- salicylic acid- remove dead skin cells
- UV light treatment
What is dermatitis
dry, itchy skin rash. sometimes referred to as Atopic dermatitis (eczema)
What are treatments for dermatitis
corticosteroids, antihistamines, antibiotics
What is Acne
Excessive production of skins natural oil > blockage or hair follicles > inflamed > Pus filled spots
What are treatments to acne
Topicals either solutions, keratolytic’s and antibacterials
What do keratolytics do
loosen dead cells; unblock follicles
What are antipruritics
treats urge to scratch the skin
What are common antipruritic medications
Antihistamines, corticosteroids, local anesthetics, Emollient and cooling preparation
What is the ophthalmic system
anything that has to do with the eye
What do Mydriatics do
dilate the pupil of the eye so we can see into the eye
What is conjunctivitis
Pink eye. membrane that covers front of eye and lines the eyelids becomes inflamed due to infection
What is Glaucoma
abnormal internal eye pressure
What are the two types of glaucoma
chronic and acute
What is chronic glaucoma
reduced drainage of fluid causes pressure to build slowly leading to long term condition- progressive deterioration of eyesight
What is acute glaucoma
sudden onset (attack) drainage of fluid is blocked by the iris > short term condition - can be treated with no lasting effects.
What is Otic
Anything that has to do with the ear.
What is Otitis media
infection of the middle ear, commonly bacterial infection. This may lead to cause permanent hearing damage
