Q

experiment?

A

researcher deliberately manipulates the IV to see the effect on the DV. Experiments allows the researcher to draw casual conclusions. An experiment normally takes place in a controlled environment but sometimes takes place in real environments.

Q

strengths of experiments?

A
  • cause researcher manipulates IV under controlled conditions you can assume cause and effect.
  • can control extraneous variables more easily and therefore results in greater internal validity.
  • takes place in a real life setting so participants are likely to behave normally increasing the ecological validity

Q

disadvantages of experiments?

A
  • takes place in a controlled environment which can be artificial therefore participants may behave unaturally resulting in low ecological validity.
  • more ethical issues than other methods
  • in real life setting its difficult to control confounding variables therefore lower internal validity than in lab

Q

quasi experiment?

A

not a true experiment as IV does not manipulate the DV however IV may change naturally. you use quasi experiment when its unethical or impractical to manipulate the IV.

Q

2 types of quasi experiments?

A
  1. natural experiment
    - when its not possible or practical to manipulate IV (how stress effects people)
  2. difference studies
    - where the IV is not something that varies at all, it is a condition that exists. (differences in age on performance)

Q

advantages for quasi ?

A
  • allows research where it would be unethical or not practice to manipulate IV
  • enables researchers to study real problems such as stress on health
  • more likely to be realistic and therefore ecologically valid

Q

disadvantage for quasi?

A
  • because you’re not directly changing IV you can’t assume cause and effect because there may be other variables present that may cause DV to change.
example = studying the effect of stress on heart disease, may be unhealthy lifestyles that cause heart problems rather than stress
