What is the site of a settlement?
The piece of land upon which a settlement is built is the settlement site.
What are some common site factors?
Wet point sites, dry point sites, defensive sites, aspect sites, shelter sites, gap towns, resources sites, bridging point sites and trading centres.
Why are site factors important?
It enables people to overcome difficulties.
What is the situation of a settlement?
The situation of a settlement is its position in relation the surrounding human and physical features, many of which will have an impact on the settlements type, size and function.
What factors influence the location of a settlement?
Water supply,
Defence ( on High ground so can look for enemies.),
Aspect and shelter ( in northern hemisphere south facing slopes Receive more sunlight and are protected by cold northerly winds so more settlements are located on south facing slopes), Communications (settlements located near bridges that could be easily crossed eg. bridging points and gap towns. so trading would become easier)
Resources (early settlers relied upon wood for fuel and building so a site close to a woodland would be an advantage.
What land use patterns do we find in urban areas?
Usually in the centre of an urban area there is the Central business district. These contain places like shops, entertainment and offices.
Next there is the inner city which contain houses and flats and few areas of open land.
