- was an adopted son to ceasar; ceasar had no
known sons of age for succession at the time of his death. - Defeats Marc Antony and Cleapatra adding Egypt to the Roman Empire.
- came into power during some “ immoral times” in roman history, makes effort to bring the empire back to order.
- continues tradition of choosing an adopted son as his successor, appoints Tiberius, his wife’s son from a previous marriage.

- Etruscans were known for their elaborately carved tombs.
- Romans overthrew Etruscan royalty and set up the republic to replace it.
- Etruscans would eat their meals reclined, on couches of sorts.

- the chinese examination system greatly favored the more priviledged and well off individuals. the poorer class was unable to spend the time and money needed to suceed.
- examination system was comprised of 3 different exams, each one more difficult than the last.
- purpose of exam was to qualify for prestigious civil servant jobs. from the local municipality level all the way to the central government.
- there was rampant corruption and nepotism in the system.

- buddhism comes to China during end of Han dynasty.
- separated into two main denominations, Mahayana and Theravada.
- Theravada was the religion of the wealthy; those that had time to devote to the study of religious texts.
- mahayana was the religion of the masses, common people, they turned buddha from a philosopher to a deity.
- during times of instability, like the later han dynasty, people turn to religion.
