Exam 2 Flashcards
1
Q
Four General Roles of membrane in cells
A
- defines the boundary of the cell and acts as a semi-permeable barrier that restricts the movement of substances in or out of the cell
- Membranes surround and define organelles such as mitochondria and the nucleus
- regulate transport of molecules in and out of the cell between organelles and the cytoplasm
- plasma membrane receives signals from the environment including other cells.
2
Q
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum (SER)
A
Plays a major role in synthesizing lipids, storing calcium ions, and in the degrading toxins. Does not produce proteins but a part of the endomembrane system
3
Q
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum (RER)
A
houses ribosomes on its surface and gets it ready to be synthesized
4
Q
Golgi Apparatus
A
component of the endomembrane and processes proteins. Where carbohydrates are added to proteins in a process called glycosylation
5
Q
Lysosome
A
Lysosomes are involved in breaking down materials in the cell. When vesicles bud off of the plasma membrane, bringing contents from outside the cell into the cytoplasm, they first fuse with lysosomes.
