Evolutionary Explanation (Humans) Flashcards
What is argued to be the purpose of aggression?
To facilitate survival and promote the continued existence of the humanity.
According to the theory, what kind of functions does aggression serve?
It allows for humans to acquire territory and overpower potential enemies and predators who threaten them. Expressing aggression also means humans can kill animals for food or chase off others who might compromise their plant-based food sources.
What fundamental aspect of aggression does the theory omit?
Physiological causes of aggression aren’t explored within any depth; exclusively contextual factors are attributed to aggressive behaviour and the functions they serve within a survival scenario.
How might this theory be related to the nature/nurture debate?
It adopts a heavily nature position, suggesting that aggression is inherent within humanity which evolved as an adaptation to our environment which promotes survival.
How might the theory fall down when applied to contemporary society?
Expressing aggressive behaviour within modern society isn’t beneficial and usually leads to prosecution and imprisonment. The creation of the criminal justice system means aggressive behaviour is punished and its perpetrators demonised by society rather than the cause of survival and species continuation as suggested by the theory.
