evidence of evolution Flashcards
Three lines of evidence of evolution
Biogeography__________________________
_____Evidence from anatomy_____________________________________
___Evidence from embryology_______________________________________
Biogeography
Biogeography- the scientific study of the geographic distirbution of organisms based on both living species and fossils.
Biogeography
Biogeography- the scientific study of the geographic distirbution of organisms based on both living species and fossils.
Relates back to Darwin’s observation of the unusual assortment of species on the Galapagos Islands. He hypothesized that remote oceanic islands became populated by species that arrived by water or air. After the species became established, many evolved into new species over time.
Anatomy: Homologous features
a structure with a common evolutionary origin that may serve different functions in modern species. Ex) Bat wing and human arm
Analogous features
a structure that performs the same __function______________________ as another but is __not______ similar in origin or anatomical structure. Ex) Bird & Insect wings
Vestigial Features
a rudimentary and non-functioning, or only marginally functioning, structure that is homologous to a fully functioning structure in closely related species. These features __do not serve the function they do in similar species.
Embryology
In early developmental stages, the embryos of all vertebrates, including humans, posses a short bony tails and gill slits.
