Truman doctrine
A geopolitical policy that aimed to assist any nation militarily and economically in the hopes of suppressing communism based on a policy of containment.
Marshall plan
Economic aid scheme that was sponsored by the US in order to revitalise economies of Western Europe after WW2

Conference in 1943 where it was decided that Britain and America would not invade Germany via Greece.
Yalta
Conference in 1944 where it was decided that Germany would be divided into four temporary zones, Eastern European countries that were liberated from Nazi Germany would be allowed to hold free elections, creation of UN.
Potsdam
Stalin wanted to cripple Germany whereas Truman wanted to help Germany recover as soon as possible.
Arms race
Massive military build-up, especially of nuclear weapons, by both the Soviet Union and the United States in an effort to gain military superiority.
Eastern Bloc
The Eastern Bloc was a name given to the Soviet Union and its communist controlled states in Eastern Europe such as Poland, East Germany, and Bulgaria.

Proxy war
A proxy war is when two sides use third parties to fight rather than fighting each other directly. The United States and the Soviet Union fought proxy wars during the Cold War such as the Korean War and the Vietnam War.
Berlin blockade
The Berlin Blockade was an attempt in 1948 by the Soviet Union to limit the ability of France, Great Britain and the United States to travel to their sectors of Berlin, which lay within Russian-occupied East Germany.
Warsaw Pact
The Warsaw Pact was an alliance between the Soviet Union and other Eastern Europe communist nations.
Berlin airlift
Counter to Stalin’s blockade, by sending shipments of resources into Western Berlin through the air. (1948)
COMINFORM
Communist Information Bureau. The intention was to coordinate actions between communist parties under Soviet influence
COMECON
Used to facilitate and coordinate the economic development of the Eastern Europen countries belonging to the Soviet bloc.
