What is the definition of sportsmanship
Confirming to the rules, spirit and etiquette of a sport
What is gamesmanship
The art of winning games by cunning means but without actually breaking the rules
Why is the Olympic oath oath still relevant in modern day games
- stringent drug testing shows the continued importance of fair competition
- punishment for deviant behaviour
Why is the Olympic oath no longer relevant
- state sponsored drug programmes undermine the importance of the oath
- athletes displaying other deviant behaviour suc as gamesmanship
- commercialisation/financial success may make the oath less relevant
What is positive deviance
Behaviour which is outside the norms of society but with no intent to harm or break the rules
For example training too hard causing injury/competing when injured
What is negative deviance
Behaviour that goes against the norms and has a detrimental affect on individuals and society in general
For example taking drugs/deliberately fouling or injuring opponents
