Ireland prior to 1914
Background: prior to 1914, two home rule bills had failed to pass through parliament which meant the question of Irelands independence still remained. King James V had been settling protestants in Ireland since the 1500s and they remained tied to their British values.

Ireland 1918-21 obstacles to peace up to the Anglo-Irish treaty
Background: Up to 1918 there were many violent incidents in opposition to British rule such as the easter rising causing tension. This tension was further increased when sinn fein won the general election by landslide.

Ireland Troubles 1960s-1998
Background: In 1921 the Irish border was formed splitting Ireland into Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland also separating parliaments through the Anglo-Irish treaty.
Up to ‘The troubles’ there were some periods of violence including the Irish Republican Associations border campaign which saw the IRA using guerrilla tactics against police forces.

Russia security of the tsarist state before 1905
Background: Russia was hard to rule as it was extremely large and featured many different cultures and languages. Most of the population of russia at the time was illiterate and many still existed as serfs.

Russia reason for revolution 1905
Background: Russia is large and features many different languages, communities and religions such as a large minority of Jews. At the turn of the century, famine, land hunger, growing industrialisation and lack of political representation meant that the people of Russia
were growing weary of Tsarist rule.
