Erectile Dysfunction (Final Exam) Flashcards
this is the inability to achieve sustained erection in order to satisfactory perform sexual acts
erectile dysfunction (ED)
what are the two classes of drugs used to treat ED
- phosphodiesterase-5 inihbitors (PDE5i)
- Prostaglandin E1 analogs (Caverject)
what is the MOA of PDE5 inhibitors (e.g. sildenafil, vardenafil, tadalafil)?
inhibition of PDE5 located in penile vascular smooth muscle cells. cGMP levels are increased by delaying the degradation, which promotes smooth muscle relaxation in response to sexual stimulation
which PDE5i is used daily
tadalafil (Cialis)
what are some drug interactions with PDE5i?
nitrates! anti-hypertensives! <- these can make blood pressure bottom out
+ metabolized by CYP3A4 therefore watch for strong inhibitors
what are some s/e of PDE5i?
headache, flushing, dyspepsia, nasal stuffiness
