Epithelial Tissues Flashcards
What is the function of nervous tissue? Found where?
Transport electrical signals; brain, spinal cord, nerves
What is the difference between endocrine and exocrine glands?
Exocrine-produce or secrete substances into ducts
Endocrine- produce or secrete substances directly into fluid without ducts
Describe the three types of muscle tissue, and determine whether they are involuntary or voluntary.
Skeletal-voluntary, smooth-involuntary, cardiac-involuntary
What is the primary characteristic of muscle tissue?
contractibility
What are the four basic types of body tissues?
epithelial, connective, muscle, nervous
Why does cartilage tissue heal so slowly?
lack of blood flow
Cardiac muscle is found where?
In the heart
Smooth muscle tissue is found where?
walls of internal organs
What are the three types of cartilage?
hyaline, elastic, fibrocartilage
Do skeletal muscle fibers contain nuclei?
yes
Intervertebral discs are made up of what type of cartilage?
Fibrocartilage
Describe function and location of simple cuboidal tissue
Secreation, and absorption-found on surface of ovaries, kidney tubules, linings of glands
Describe function and location of simple squamous tissue
covers surface, filtration, diffusion, osmosis, protection- found on alveoli of lungs, walls
of capillaries, blood/lymph vessels
Describe function and location of simple columnar tissue
absorption, secretion, protection- found on lining of uterus, stomach, intestine
Describe function and location of stratified squamous tissue
protection- found on epidermis, throat, mouth, vagina, anal canal
