Enzymes Flashcards
1
Q
Define enzymes
A
- Enzymes are biological catalysts that speed up the rate of chemical reactions.
- They remain chemically unchanged at the end of the reaction.
- Most are made of proteins.

Characteristics of Enzymes (3)
A
1. Speeds up chemical reactions
- Lowers activation energy
2. Specific in action DUE TO 3D conformation
- Only substrates with complementary shapes to active site can fit
- Forms enzyme-substrate complex
3. Small amnts required, remains unchanged
- Efficient, remains unchanged in catalysed reactions
- Can use repeatedly, small amnt 4 big amnt substrate
