ENZYMES Flashcards
1
Q
Enzymes
A
- proteins
- end in -ase
- Speed up reactions by lowering the activation energy required for reactions to occur
Example: Uroporphyrinogen decarboxylase: 2-3 BILLION years
2
Q
Types of Enzymes
A
VERY specific, each enzyme has only 1 function.
- Active site where reactants can be brought together to react
- Enzymes and substrates: lock and key, they bond until the reaction is done, and substrates are converted to products.
- products released and enzymes are free to start again
3
Q
Enzyme Action
A
Can be affected by any variable that influences protein and chemical reactions .
- pH
- temp
Acidic Enzyme: 6: stomach
Basic Enzyme: 9: intestine
