Enzyme Controlled Reactions (Topic 1A) Flashcards
Ways to measure rate of enzyme controlled reaction
Measure how fast a product is made or measure how fast a substrate is broken down
What does the enzyme catalase do
catalyses the breakdown of hydrogen peroxide to water and oxygen
Apparatus needed to measure how fast a product is made
boiling tube, delivery tube, bung, hydrogen peroxide solution and catalase enzyme, trough of water, upside down measuring cylinder.
What do the boiling tubes need to contain
same volume and concentration of hydrogen peroxide, with an equal volume of buffer
What does a PH buffer do
keeps the PH constant
Where do the boiling tubes go
in a water bath at different temperatures
what enzyme is added to boiling tubes
catalyse, then add bung and measure oxygen produced in first minute with a stopwatch
How do you find an average volume produced
Repeat each temperature three times
How do you calculate average rate of reaction
divide the volume of oxygen produced by time taken
Enzyme used to investigate how fast a substrate is broken down
amylase
What does the enzyme amylase do
it catalyses the breakdown of starch to maltose
Apparatus used to investigate how fast a substrate is broken down
spotting tile, dropping pipette, drop of iodine in potassium iodide, test tube and starch solution and amylase solution
How to test how fast a substrate is broken down
test how long it takes for colour change to occur from orange to blue black
