Enteral Nutrition Flashcards
1
Q
Enteral Nutrition
A
- preferred route of nutritional support
- maintains intestinal integrity and immune function
- reduces risk of infections and metabolic complications
2
Q
Bedside/short term feeding placement
A
- nasogastric
- orogastric
- esophagostomy
- nasoduodenal
- nasojejunal
3
Q
Surgical/long term feeding placement
A
- gastrostomy
- jejunostomy
- PEG or PEJ
4
Q
No bolus feeds
A
- Nasoduodenal, Nasojeujunal, Jejunostomy
- cannot feed into small intestine
5
Q
No crushed meds in
A
Jejunostomy
6
Q
Method of choice in the ICU
A
Continuous (gastric, small bowel)
7
Q
Method to provide supplemental nutrition, usually at night
A
Cyclic (gastric, small bowel)
8
Q
- Quick, convenient, physiologic
- Avoid if high aspiration risk or poor gastric emptying
A
Bolus (gastric)
9
Q
Slower method of delivery for those who do not tolerate bolus feeds
A
Intermittent (gastric)
10
Q
Early EN
A
- within 48 hours of admission
- reduced mortality rates associated with early EN
- Not warranted for previously well-nourished, mild-to-moderately stressed adult patients who are not critically ill
- May delay initiation of EN for up to 5-7 days
11
Q
Hemodynamically instable
A
- may result in bowel necrosis due to poor gut perfusion and inc oxygen demand
- delay EN until patient is fluid resuscitated and vasopressors are being withdrawn or doses are reduced/stable
12
Q
Gastrointestinal intolerance
A
-may contribute to aspiration, requires holding feeds and impacts delivery of nutrition
