Energy Study Guide Flashcards
Thermodynamics 1st law
Energy cannot be created nor destroyed but it changes form.
Endergonic reaction
Chemical reaction that consumes energy
Exergonic
This chemical reaction proceeds with the release of free energy.
Understand the classification of carbohydrates
sugar, starch, cellulose, gums (pectins)
60-75% of energy in a poultry diet is from?
Carbohydrates
What are the functions of carbohydrates?
- sources of heat and energy
- provide structures for synthesis of other nutrients
- energy storage through fat conversion
Describe the structural differences between starch and hemicellulose.
Starch has alpha 1,4 and alpha 1,6 bonds which amylase recognizes.
Hemicellulose has alpha and beta bonds. amylose will not recognize beta bonds.
Describe the poor utilization of carbohydrate fractions in SBM by the bird.
- Contains pectins and free sugars which is a non starch polysaccharide with Beta bonds.
- lack of 1,6 galactosidase in the body in order to utilize free sugars
What are the structural differences between amylase and amylopectin?
amylase: alpha 1,4 linkages
amylopectin: alpha 1,6 linkages
