Energy & Enzymes Flashcards
Is how organisms obtain & use energy
All chemical reactions that keep an organism alive
2 types: catabolic and anabolic reactions
Metabolism
Tear & breakdown molecules
Release energy
Digestion of organic molecules
Catabolic reactions
Build up molecules
Uses energy
Building proteins, storing energy
Anabolic reactions
Get energy from chemical reactions from sunlight or chemicals
Autotrophs
Ex: photosynthesis
Get energy for chemical reactions by eating or absorbing food (organic molecules)
Heterotrophs
Substrate = reaction
Substrate enter reactive site, enzyme/substrate complex forms, substrate is converted to products & products leave active site of enzyme
How enzymes work
Helpers/adapters improve fit of the substrate in to the active site.
Cofactors ex: vitamins, NADH, FAD, coenzyme A
Enzymes & cofactors
Competing for the active site with substrate
Switch off enzymes
Competitive inhibition
Binds to the site (allosteric) & changes shape of active site
Switching enzymes off
Noncompetitive inhibition
Allosteric interactions
Switch on enzymes
