energy Flashcards
study
kinetic energy
the form of energy that it possesses due to its motion.
potential energy
the energy held by an object because of its position relative to other objects.
elastic potential energy
the mechanical potential energy stored in the configuration of a material or physical system.
chemical potential energy
the energy stored in the chemical bonds of a substance.
gravitational potential energy
the potential energy a massive object has due to its position in a gravitational field.
mechanical energy
the sum of potential energy and kinetic energy.
law of conservation of energy
The total energy of an isolated system remains constant.
work
activity involving mental or physical effort done in order to achieve a purpose or result.
power
move or travel with great speed or force.
machine
an apparatus using or applying mechanical power and having several parts, each with a definite function and together performing a particular task.
input force
the force exerted on an object by a simple machine.
output force
he force exerted on an object by a simple machine
mechanical advantage
a measure of the force amplification achieved by using a tool, mechanical device or machine system.
efficiency
the state or quality of being efficient.
simple machine
a mechanical device that changes the direction or magnitude of a force.
lever
a rigid bar resting on a pivot, used to help move a heavy or firmly fixed load with one end when pressure is applied to the other.
pully
a wheel on an axle or shaft enabling a taut cable or belt passing over the wheel to move and change direction.
wheel and axle
a simple machine consisting of a wheel attached to the smaller axle so that these two parts rotate with each other.
inclined plane
a flat supporting surface tilted at an angle from the vertical direction.
screw
an externally helical threaded fastener capable of being tightened or released by a twisting force
wedge
a piece of wood, metal, or some other material having one thick end and tapering to a thin edge, that is driven between two objects or parts of an object to secure or separate them.
