Energy Flashcards
Which 3 factors affect the energy required to heat something up?
Mass of material
The required temperature change
The type of material (specific heat capacity of the material)
What is the unit for energy?
Joules (J)
What is the unit for temperature?
Degrees Celsius *C
What is the difference between energy and thermal energy?
Thermal energy is stored when raising something to a certain temperature.
Conduction
Heat energy is transferred through atoms (particles) bumping into one another. It occurs more in solids because the atoms are closer together.
Convection
Transfer of heat energy in liquids and gases.
Convection current
Hotter particles rise and cooler particles fall to the bottom
Radiation
Thermal energy is transferred via infrared waves. This means it does not need particles like conduction and convection.
