What does the CFI need to do in order to sign off the student pilot to solo?
- The students authorized instructor must administer the knowledge test AND review all incorrect answers with the student
- Go over maneuvers listed in 61.87(d)
- The students authorized instructor who gave the training must endorse the student’s logbook within 90 days preceding the flight
Can a student pilot solo at night?
Yes. Under 61.87(o) the student must have:
- Received training at night, including T/O and landings at the airports where the solo flight will be conducted.
- Navigation training at night in the vicinity of the airport where the solo flight will be conducted and
- Received an endorsement in the student’s logbook from an authorized instructor who gave the training within a 90 day period
Can you sign off a student pilot to solo in an aircraft you’ve never flown with, and given them training, in?
No. 61.87(p)(1) states:
- No instructor my authorize a student pilot to solo unless that instructor has given that student pilot training in the make and model of aircraft in which the solo flight is to be flown
What are the limitations of flight visibility for a student pilot?
61.89(a)(6-8):
Student Pilot may not act as PIC of an aircraft (solo):
- With flight visibility of less than 3 SM during daylight hours, and 5 SM at night
- When the flight cannot be made with visual reference to the surface
- In a manner to any limitations placed in the pilot’s logbook by an authorized instructor

- The authorized instructor who gave the training must endorse the student pilot’s logbook authorizing the flight

How far away can a CFI endorse a student pilot to solo?

What are the five ways a student pilot can receive ground training?
- CoG from a pilot training course conducted by an FAA-certified pilot school appropriate to the rating sought
- An endorsement from an authorized instructor who has certified that the applicant has satisfactorily completed the ground for the appropriate certificate sought
- A CoG or statement of accomplishment from a ground school course appropriate to the rating sought from an agency such as HS, college, civil air patrol, ROTC
- A CoG from an industry provided aviation home study course.
- Student can present an individually developed home study course to an appropriately certified flight school or AGI. The instructor will review the material and question the applicant to determine the course was adquate
