Endocrine system Flashcards
systems and functions
The role/function of the endocrine system is?
Secretes hormones which regulate different functions of the human body like growth, emotions and metabolism
what are Hormones/ what do they do?
chemical messages, transfer messengers from the endocrine gland that made them, through the bloodstream, to certain cells in other organs of the body.
what are the 9 different glands in body?
Hypothalamus, pituitary gland, pineal gland, thymus, thyroid, parathyroid gland, adrenal gland, pancreas, ovaries/ testes
where and what is the Pituitary gland
found hanging by a stalk form the surface of the hypothalamus. Is referred to as the master gland because it releases hormones that control most of the other glands.
where and what is the Pineal gland
found in the middle of the brain, releases the hormone Melatonin, which is believed to be the sleep trigger, peak levels of this hormone at night.
where and what is the thymus gland
located in the upper thorax posterior to the sternum. it produces white blood cells called T lymphocytes and helps to control the WBC levels.
Parathyroid gland is?
4 tiny masses of Glander tissues were found on the posterior surface of the thyroid gland
what hormone dose parathyroid gland releases?
Parathyroid hormones (PTH)- which regulate the calcium levels in blood. (PTH stimulates bone to breakdown and releases calcium/ when levels to low)
adrenal glands are found, and composed of?
bean shaped glands over the top of the kidneys.
consists of an
- the outer part called the Adrenal cortex that regulates the salt and water balance in the body.
- the inner part called the adrenal medulla which controls the ‘fight or flight response’
what hormones do the adrenal glands release?
adrenaline
where and what is the pancreas
located in the abdomen, behind the stomach. The pancreas controls the blood glucose levels and blood pressure is controlled by anti-diuretic hormones and meaning the endocrine system is involved in homeostasis
reproductive glands are? and the main sex hormone is?
testes and ovaries and the main sex hormones are gonads.
Parotid is?
Are major salivary glands. they’re located just in front of and below each ear. parotid glands produce saliva (spit) to keep your mouth lubricated, and to aid in chewing and digestion.
decreases blood sugar levels is
pancreas
