Endocrine System Flashcards
define hormone
A substance, usually a peptide or steroid, produced by one tissue and conveyed by the bloodstream to another to effect physiological activity, such as growth or metabolism
how is a hormone introduced into the system?
Released by the glands:
Individual ductless gland
These ductless glands are rich in capillaries
Form and secrete hormones. These hormones have specific target organs
what does the pineal gland do?
regulates circadian rhythm
Releases melatonin.
where is the pineal gland located?
Posterior part of the epithalamus
what is needed to form T3?
iodine component, need iodine to form T3, low iodine goiter will develop
what does the T4 component of the thyroid control?
controls the metabolic rate of all tissues.
what does the parathyroid do?
(PTH) Maintains Calcium levels within the system (especially within the bone), Phosporus, Vitamin D level
Breakdown calcium from bones if there is a needed
what does the adrenal gland do?>
Epinephrine (sympathetic), norepinephrine (vasoconstrictor),
when you are stressed in releases cortisol & hydrocortisol(released during stress)
what is the pituatary gland considered?
MASTER GLAND - tells the other glands when and how to release their hormones
what two things does the thyroid release?
T3 and T4
