Endocrine Drugs Flashcards
What is the collection of glands and tissues that secrete hormones into the bloodstream?
Endocrine system
A chemical substance produced in the body that controls and regulates the activity of certain cells or organs.
Hormones
The target of this gland are the liver and adipose tissue. It increases secretion of IGF-I for bone and muscle growth.
Anterior Pituitary
Release of glucose, amino acids and fatty acids into the blood.
Adrenal Cortex
Regulation of metabolic rate and promotion of body growth.
Thyroid
Increase in BP, blood glucose and bronchodilation.
Adrenal Medulla
Stimulates growth in tissue and bone.
Growth Hormone
Stimulates growth in tissue and bone.
Growth Hormone
Adverse Effects: GI distress, constipation/ diarrhea, flatulence, nausea, acute cholecystitis.
Somatostatin Agonists
Adverse Effect:
-Water Intoxication [drowsiness, light-headnedness, headache, coma, convulsions]
-Hangover Effect: tremor, sweating, vertigo, headache
ADH [Vasopressin], Pitressin Synthetic, Desmopressiin
Used to initiate labor, promote delivery of placenta and control post-partum hemorrhage.
Oxytocin
Used to initiate labor, promote delivery of placenta and control post-partum hemorrhage.
Oxytocin
Produces hormones called CORTICOSTERIODS
Adrenal Cortex
Used to promote lung maturation in premature infants.
Glucocorticoids
Prevent formation of thyroid hormone and Inhibit conversion of T4 to T3
Antithyroid Agents
