End product inhibition Flashcards
what is a metabolic pathway
a series of metabolic reactions
the product of the first reaction, takes part in the second reaction and so on
Each reaction is catalysed by a different enzyme
what is product inhibition
when the product inhibits the enzyme
what is END product inhibition
inhibits an enzyme that acts EARLIER on in the pathway
why is END product inhibition good
good way of CONTROLLING the amount of end product produced
so we don’t produce too much of that product
EG. when phosphofructokinase helps produce ATP
and is then inhibited by ATP to prevent more ATP from being made
is product/end product inhibition
reversible OR irreveresible?
Reversible
- as level of product decreases
- level of inhibition decreases
- enzymes function again
- more product CAN be made
what can enzymes be synthesised to.
To prevent causing damage to cells
inactive precursors
part of these molecules inhibit some of its enzyme action
once the precursor is removed the enzyme can become active again
