Enchantment Flashcards
Erna opens the door, sees them and abruptly steps back.
I’m sorry
He kisses her hand and exits with a bow to Erna, who doesn’t acknowledge him.
I won’t keep you
Louise: Are you all right, Erna? You look –
You don’t look so great yourself
Louise: What’s happened?
Same old stuff. But today I couldn’t stand it any longer. I told him to get packing.
Louise: Aren’t you in love with him any more?
In love with him? I’ve never been in love with him. How could you love someone like that? He’s just a parasite, feeding off other people. He hasn’t got anything of his own to contribute - no talent, no originality, nothing.
Louise: But you always knew that…
Of course I knew it. He was better than nothing. I was broken-hearted, remember? Some women turn to the bottle. I’ve never been much of a drinker so I turned to other men, instead. It dulled the pain at least for a while.
Louise enters. She is pale and staring, like a sleepwalker.
What is it? What’s happened now?
Louise: I’ve just been to his studio. I’ve seen his new piece. Everyone agrees that it’s his most outstanding work yet.
So why has it made you like this?
Louise: He calls it ‘Fate’. It’s a group.
Fate! What’s that supposed to mean.
Louise: I’ll never forget it. The marble, dazzling white..
Was it you?
Louise: He’s a great, great man, and I’ve treated him as an equal! I’ve been presumptuous enough to believe that he needed some comfort that I had to offer, and yet he is –
He’s thoroughly human. Just like you. Just like me.
Louise: It was like being confronted with something more than human. Something sublime. The dead woman has my features, you see, but she is nobler, immortal, preserved for eternity -
Louise, I think you should lie down. I think you should calm down.
Louise: Yes.
It’s over. That was his way of saying goodbye.
The louse
Louise: (vehemently) Don’t say that! You’ve got no right! He hasn’t betrayed me, or you, or anyone! He’s just different from the rest of us. He’s different.
He’s a bastard. And now, at last you are going to close your door to him and refuse to let him in.
Louise: Me? Refuse him?
Yes! You owe it to yourself.
